Tears For Russia

A song dedicated to the millions of people who died in Russia during the 20th century from the Russian Revolution to the fall of the Soviet Union. The Russian people faced adversity for almost 100 years, with tragedy after tragedy striking innocent peasants, intellectuals, and soldiers being the common victims. Even though this nation was the direct rival of the United States during the Cold War, we were arguably facing the government alone, while the innumerable citizens watched the decisions being made with no opportunity of input of their own. The magnificence of these chivalrous souls is to be greatly admired, for they endured trials infinitely more difficult than any American.

The Undying

INT. NEWS STATION

Riviera is nervously fumbling with his tie. Just around the
corner, a world famous talk show is preparing to bring in
Riviera for an interview of which billions of people will be
witnessing. His friend comes by and gives him delicate
support. Tokoa grabs the attention of his comrade and offers
as much moral foundation as one can provide to an
introverted scientist about to be interviewed on live
television for the world to observe.

TOKOA
This is our moment Riviera.

He stares into Tokoa's eyes with intent focus.

RIVIERA
I know.

TOKOA
Just discuss our general goals and
ideals as an organization. Our
competition has already been
interpreted from many sources as
inferior, and they can't run from
that. Show them we have nothing to
hide and that we are not out for
money.

Riviera clears his throat and nods in approval. Tokoa places
his hand on his shoulder, and Riviera returns the gesture
with a hint of strength.

FROM THE LIVE TELECAST:

ANCHOR
And finally, with us today is the
co-founder of the bio-medical
organization, Meditate, Riviera
Schnietzalman.

Riviera braces himself and bravely enters center stage from
right. Upon his approach, the audience applauds with fervor.
He humbly greets the two show members and sits down in one
of the seats along the studio set interview table.

INT. CENTER STAGE NETWORK SET

HOST
It's truly an honor to have you on
the show tonight Mr. Schnietzalman.

RIVIERA
Thank you very much, the pleasure
is fully my own on behalf of
Meditate.

JOURNALIST
The work you and your collaborators
have achieved is astonishing.

RIVIERA
Again, thank you, your words are
inspiration.

JOURNALIST
So, we have a few questions for
you, a collection of inquiries from
both the viewers at home and
ourselves. Seeing as this is a
competition, shall we begin?

RIVIERA
Of course.

JOURNALIST
Okay: Mr. Schnietzalman.

RIVIERA
Please call me Riviera ma'am, there
is no need to regard me with such
formality.

JOURNALIST
Understood, sir. My first question
is: What inspired you and your
friends to participate in this
competition in the first place?

RIVIERA
Well, throughout college we had
large aspirations of
revolutionizing the medical
industry, but not in the
capitalistic sense that we mainly
see in today-

CUT TO:

INT. NEWS STATION - MONITOR ROOM

An assortment of men and women are operating efficiently and
fluidly in front of a smorgasbord of video, audio, and
network equipment. Among them is a technical director and
network administrator overseeing the entire process.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
How many viewers do we have?

NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
You're not going to believe this...

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Is that so? Well now I'm intrigued.

The network administrator chuckles to himself, knowing that
his adjacent affiliate has no idea what to expect.

NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
We've got nine point four billion
viewers, and they're pushing our
network to very limit.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Jesus Christ, how are we still
broadcasting?

NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
A lot of governments are watching
this, there's no way the yanks were
going to let the show drop.

BACK TO:

INT. CENTER STAGE NETWORK SET

RIVIERA
We had the idea to create a non
profit organization, purely for the
progression of mankind. We never
had a lot of money growing up, and
we didn't have that intention; of
trying to achieve a superficial
object so insignificant and
temporary. (Beat) We wanted to make
something that would last forever.

Behind the stage, TOKOA restrains overwhelming pride and
joy. Riviera nailed it and he can feel it's monumental
pulse.

JOURNALIST
That's absolutely incredible.

HOST
Yes it is, but perhaps we should
explain for those viewers who are
not entirely educated on the
subject of our discussion tonight.
Excuse my deposition Riviera.

RIVIERA
I have no complaints.

HOST
Thank you: One year ago, Great
Britain's government launched an
ambitious and progressive
competition for people all over the
world who wanted to make a
difference. They called upon the
talents and efforts of
entrepreneurs, artists, scientists,
engineers, politicians,
environmentalists, and so forth to
create an entirely new program or
organization dedicated to the sole
purpose of improving the state of
mankind, whether that be in
education, liberal art, or
medicine, it was entirely up to
them. Many incredibly devoted teams
from countries all over the globe
pitched their ideas to the British
government, but not all were left
standing.

JOURNALIST
However, some unique and promising
nominees were picked up by private
organizations even though they
didn't make it to the final
collection of what have been named,
the most forward thinking
generation in the last one hundred
years.

HOST
Yes: some of the ideas presented
before our finalist here tonight
have gone on to change the face of
united academics despite not
achieving total success.

ANCHOR
With of all of that being said, we
arrive back at one of two finalists
left standing. (Beat) Will you
change the world if you win young
man?

A slug of a question. Its' weight nearly knocks the breath
from Riviera, but he gets back in the ring.

RIVIERA
(Nervous)
I certainly intend to, we have
every intention to.

HOST
Do you feel a lot of pressure?

RIVIERA
Yes, an enormous amount,
truthfully.

JOURNALIST
This is from our viewers at home,
voted the most popular question in
a poll of what they desired most to
hear you answer: Are you out to
achieve human immortality?

Lights dim, fires burn, oceans turn, small birds fly, people
die, babies are born, comets sail through the galaxy
millions of light years away, a star dies in the far reaches
of dark space. And a single question captures an audience.
Riviera feels the gaze of an entire population, and the
silence of their curious hearts.

RIVIERA
That is what we have set out to
achieve.

The audience rises in a wave of emotion, their applause
overwhelms the entire studio and the three interviewers
instinctively submit to the verbose of these passionate
individuals, and what is undoubtedly, the collected
excitement of billions watching from around the world.

Electrical signals being sent from their eyes to their
brains, mental computations unbelievably complex and
instantaneous, interpreting images so simple and timelessly
elegant, accumulate into a question being asked by everyone
staring at this dull specimen of a man: Is he our long lost
God?

Tears drop from the cheeks of men and women incapable of
comprehending the gravity upon which their futures will be
bound. Riviera looks back toward the audience, with
equivalent incomprehension. These two parties quietly agree
through mutual gazes and thought, however, that their life
will never be the same.

CUT TO:

INT. PARLIAMENT

The Prime Minister is sitting at his immaculate desk until
he is greeted by Tokoa and Riviera.

RIVIERA
Sir, I would just like to say it's
an honor for you to have chosen us.
We will not let you-

PRIME MINISTER
I know you won't. That is what I
want to talk about.

PRIME MINISTER
(Suave)
Do I have to ask gentlemen?

They look at each other, and then the empty chairs in front
of them. They all get the message and sit down.

PRIME MINISTER
Here I am, in the presence the
proclaimed geniuses of the young
generation. Who is sitting in front
of me exactly?

TOKOA
I am the economic adviser of
Meditate, Tokoa, sir.

The prime minister chuckles to himself. Vivian wasn't
expecting this particular reaction.

PRIME MINISTER
Their will be no funds for you to
manage from here, Tokoa, you have
complete funding from the British
government, do you realize that?

RIVIERA
Well, we didn't plan on spending
your money freely without thought,
we will make rational economic
decisions, which is what Tokoa is
here to do.

PRIME MINISTER
Fascinating. Two young men who
aren't freely using the ends
justifying the means philosophy as
a main cannon of their legitimacy.
I respect that. But, tell me, where
do you plan on beginning such an
ambitious endeavor?

TOKOA
We understand that we may need to
build up the technology ourselves,
but we are practically on the brink
of breaking the genetic algorithm
of the hydrozoan.

PRIME MINISTER
The planet's only immortal animal.

TOKOA
That is correct.

RIVIERA
We will split up R&D between field
study of the hydrozoan and
development of advanced
nanotechnology.

PRIME MINISTER
That sounds like a plan.

RIVIERA
We think so.

NOAH
Where do we go from here, prime
minister?

PRIME MINISTER
I am giving you full access to all
of the Universities in Great
Britain to assemble your talents. I
am also granting you the valuable
resource that is our most advanced
laboratories in England and
Ireland. France's best engineers
and architects have shown interest
and are currently building a
specialized facility in Paris to
house your organization when they
finish about six months from now.

The two look at each in shock and awe.

TOKOA
Thank you so much!

RIVIERA
We will not let the world down.

PRIME MINISTER
Are you guys ready to begin?

RIVIERA
More than ready.

END OF ACT ONE

INT. MEDITATE HEADQUARTERS

About twenty years have passed since the astonishing debut
of meditate under the support of the British empire. The
three bold entrepreneurs created a revolutionary
organization, but they didn't fully live up to their one
ambitious promise. They did, however, manage to change the
world instead.

ISIAH
Hello, is there something I can
assist you with?

SAGE
Your father is a saint, son, and
you look just like him.

Isiah realizes the indisputable respect being directed at
him and smiles most courteously. He goes to shake the old
man's hand and is quickly swept up in a passionate embrace.

SAGE
You men are angels, you have saved
my entire family, do you understand
that?

ISIAH
No, but I'm glad to hear it, that's
our goal, sir.

The old man backs away and gazes into Isiah's eyes with
intent respect.

SAGE
I thought your father was crazy
when he was saying the things he
said back in the day. But I was
wrong. And I'm glad for it.

ISIAH
My father was an ambitious man. May
I have your name, sir, I don't
believe it was ever presented to
me.

SAGE
Oh yes, pardon my manners, I am
Roosevelt Garcia. Pleased to meet
you.

Isiah half smiles at his infinite courtesy.

ISIAH
How old are you, sir, if you don't
mind me asking?

SAGE
One hundred and twenty eight.
Thanks to your father, and I
suppose I should thank you, too,
for carrying on his work.

Isiah appears to enter a state of deep thought. A bubble of
unknown shrouds his personality for a brief period of
inversion.

ISIAH
I appreciate that Roosevelt.

The son of Tokoa, Noah, practically identical to her parent,
enters the office in a state of urgency.

NOAH
Isiah, you need to see something,
now.

Isiah gives Noah his full attention and just before taking
off, realizes the indignity being applied to his current
guest.

ISIAH
If you don't mind me leaving, sir.

SAGE
Not at all, don't let me stop you.

ISIAH
Thanks.

Sage watches Isiah exit with a curious eye, like a child
watching an eagle fly after miraculously landing in front of
him for just a split second.

NOAH
There's been a breakthrough in one
of the R&D labs.

They arrive at the laboratory and a group of people are
jumping around with an excitement normally seen at a late
night Costa Rican salsa club.

SCIENTIST
I can't believe this, we found it!

ISIAH
Found what?

SCIENTIST
The genetic sequencing, sir! The
basic genetic algorithm of the
hydrozoah!

INT. PRESS RELEASE STAGE

Noah, the son of Tokoa, is sitting in front of a camera,
similar to the set-up one would see during a presidential
speech from the white house. He looks nervous, but prepared,
and Isiah is kneeling next to him, trying to instill
direction into the young man.

ISIAH
There is nothing to be nervous
about, this will be a simple
announcement to people who have
great respect for us. It'll be just
me, you, and the camera, okay?

NOAH
Yeah, I got it. Should I make the
announcement right away or should I
build up to it?

ISIAH
Personally, I would be as efficient
as possible in my speech, but if it
makes you feel more comfortable, I
have no quarrels.

NOAH
You still didn't help me, Isiah!

Isiah chuckles, but restrains himself considerably taking
into account the entire situation.

ISIAH
Alright, I say begin with the news,
there's no point in lingering on
indecision.

The camera operator interrupts.

CAMERA OPERATOR
We're live in twenty seconds, step
off camera now if you're not in the
production, please.

NOAH
(At Isiah)
Thanks, now get off the stage.

ISIAH
Good luck.

The countdown ticks as Noah peacefully adjusts himself for
live exposure. At the climax of the countdown, he
consolidates every ounce of courage and preparation within
him. The camera operator points at Noah, indicating that he
is live. Noah looks into the camera.

NOAH
Earlier today, in one of our
specialized research and
development labs, we discovered the
key to human immortality.

Sudden drop to black.

END OF ACT TWO

INT. WORLD ETHICS ASSEMBLY

Several people are gathered around a darkly lit conference
room. One of them is standing up and walking around the
congregation of people, obviously the dominant force in the
group.

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
What you did yesterday morning was
outrageous, Isiah, do you
understand the moral and ethical
complications?

ISIAH
Sir, we did it in the uncensored
name of science and democracy.

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
I understand why you did it, but
there will be far greater
consequences than any of us can
probably estimate. Issues that
should have been discussed between
your team and the world's
governments.

NOAH
Perhaps we shouldn't have released
the statement, then.

ISIAH
No. We had every right to say what
we did. Our team hasn't even
created a human compatible serum,
all we did was simply inform the
people of Great Britain on our
progress. We are using tax payer
dollars, their money, and they
deserve to know what is being done
with it.

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
First of all, when you make an
announcement anywhere, let alone an
announcement about uncovering the
genetic sequencing of the only
immortal creature known on earth,
you are making a statement to the
entire world, it is the nature of
the press.

ISIAH
We should make a clarification
response as soon as possible.

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
Yes you should, but I'm not
entirely sure on the idea itself.

ISIAH
What?

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
Of human immortality.

NOAH
Why is that, exactly?

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
How do you decide who gets it and
who doesn't?

ISIAH
Everyone will get it, shouldn't
that be an implied answer?

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
Even the rapists, the murderers,
the dictators, killers, criminally
insane-

ISIAH
Enough, I get the point.

Isiah and Noah look at each other, both agreeing in eye
contact that they hadn't thought of that before.

NOAH
We never considered that...

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
This could be the greatest ethical
issue of our entire specie's
history.

ISIAH
I need to meet with my father, and
the rest of the organization.

PRESIDENT OF ETHICS
Yes, and I will assemble the entire
Ethics Committee. This is a topic
that will need to be discussed with
the greatest minds on the face of
the earth.

ISIAH
If that's what it has come to, it
shall be done.

The characters from the table get up and leave in separate
directions. Noah and Isiah walk together.

ISIAH
I want you to begin the
restatement, and I'll contact the
organization for the meeting.

NOAH
Understood, sir.

ISIAH
I'm heading back to the UK now,
I'll see you there tomorrow.

NOAH
You got a plane waiting for you?

ISIAH
The same one we both came on.

NOAH
Can I just come with you and film
the restatement back at HQ?

Isiah thinks for a moment.

ISIAH
Sure, let's go.

They both head to the flight line and depart from the
Versailles, France Ethics Confederation.

INT. AIRPLANE

Isiah is sitting comfortably with a cell phone in his hand,
indecisively staring at it. Eventually he concedes and dials
a number, his father's. It rings three times before an
answer.

ISIAH
Father?

Unheard response.

ISIAH
Yes, it's Isiah.

Unheard response.

ISIAH
Yes, I have important news for you,
besides what we announced
yesterday. It is very much related,
however.

Unheard response.

ISIAH
The French Ethics Confederation
wants-

Noah comes into the cabin and interrupts Isiah.

ISIAH
(To Riviera)
Hold on, dad.

NOAH
The BBC just said there are riots
breaking out all across the world!

ISIAH
(To Riviera)
I'll call you back later.

Isiah hangs up and walks with Noah through the cabin.

ISIAH
Is that true?

NOAH
Yeah, it's like anarchy across the
globe right now, even the
governments can't control it.

ISIAH
Oh no... I think the President of
Ethics was right.

NOAH
I have no doubts about that right
now.

ISIAH
Riots...

NOAH
Thousands of people have died
already, it's worst in developing
countries...

ISIAH
..They're tired of all the
developed nations getting the
better deals in life. I understand
exactly how they feel.

NOAH
We haven't even said who we're
giving it too and people are still
going crazy.

ISIAH
Has information ever been released
about the location of the meditate
headquarters?

NOAH
Yes. One time, back in our fathers'
days when it was just being
founded. A short story on CBS
directed toward the younger
generation.

NOAH
What do we do know, Isiah?

ISIAH
I'm not sure, let's get back to
Meditate headquarters first.

INT. MEDITATE HEADQUARTERS

Isiah and Noah are sitting in a defeated position as loud
bangs are heard from outside.

NOAH
Looks like the world wants to live
forever, even if they have to kill
someone to do it.

ISIAH
(More directed at himself than
Noah)
Such a tragic paradox, isn't it? I
feel so sorry for my dad, to see
his dream end like this, you know?

NOAH
There's nothing he could have
differently Isiah, peoples'
reactions would have still been the
same.

ISIAH
I just wish the world was
different, I wish we could have
changed it.

NOAH
You can change the world, Isiah,
but you can't change people.
